Surviving the Modern Day Breakup

We live in modern times. Before, you could avoid seeing or thinking about post-relationship fallout for maybe weeks. Nowadays, it’s not so easy to run away. All that's needed is a Facebook blast stating that ‘you are no longer in a relationship’ and all your friends will be on you in a heartbeat.

Here are some tips to surviving the modern day break-up.
1. Go ninja

What we mean by this is by going off the radar with your relationship status. Before you do the deed of unlisting your ex-significant other, set your relationship status privacy setting to “Only Me”. Only then should you change your status.

After that, wait a day or two and un-private your settings with your new relationship status. That way, you would have done the painful without it appearing on everyone’s news feed.

This is very handy in dodging those near-guaranteed questions of “Are you ok?” and “What happened?”. Let’s face it, no one wants to answer those questions fresh out of a break up.
2. Think Long-term – Untag those photos

This may be a painful move straight out of a break-up. But sooner or later, you will need to bite that bullet and untag all the couple pictures of both of you.

It is difficult and tedious, if you two were a snap-happy couple. However, it has very practical benefits.

Imagine your next flame sifting through all the pictures of you two laughing and smiling with comments like “You guys are so good together!” plastered all over. Now imagine his/her jealous face. Not a pretty sight, huh?

No one wants to be reminded that you were once in love with another person. Try to erase you and your ex’s Facebook history as much as possible before getting back out there.
3. Should I Unfriend My Ex?

This is a tough call and one that is very personal. But if you’re like any normal, hurting human being, it won’t bode well to continue receiving updates about your ex. In fact, it may set back any healing your heart would have been doing.

If you feel that unfriending the ex may be too harsh a step, we recommend you hide updates from your ex from your news feed. This feature allows you to selectively block updates from certain individuals so you’ll never need to see them.

As what Neil Sedaka sings: “Breaking up is hard to do”. Getting over it is even worst. But with a few clicks of your Facebook settings, you’ll be able to give yourself space to heal and eventually, let go.
