Modern Bedroom Furniture – Clean and Simple

Modern Bedroom Furniture - Clean and Simple

Sleek and simple platform beds are the rage. They are just waiting to be dressed up with a brightly patterned comforter and plush pillows. Throw in a matching dresser and endtable and let their clean lines and subtle elegance fill up the room.

Unlike traditional bedroom furniture which is usually made of wood and embellished with elaborate carved designs, modern bedroom furniture is clean with no frills and usually made of wood or metal, especially aluminum. It is lightweight and space saving, creating an open and inviting sanctuary. Unlike traditional furniture, which takes up more space and creates a cluttered space for you to rest in.

I Want To Upgrade My Video Chat Capabilities

Integrated webcams have become standard on almost every laptop, which is  great not only for people who make lip-syncing videos on YouTube, but also for families who want to stay connected across long distances. However, not all webcams are created equal. That’s why Chief Warrant Officer David is looking to for a device that will provide the best experience when chatting with his loved ones from overseas.
I am getting ready for a military deployment and I wanted to upgrade my video chat abilities with my wife. I am looking to buy two new devices. What should I look for in a laptop, as far as getting the best quality video chat? Is the iPad 2 the best option? Should I use an aftermarket webcam? No preference on the screen size, but I like a good battery life. I would like to stay under $1000. Thanks.
The webcams that come integrated into laptops aren’t usually of the highest quality, but recently we’ve seen more high-megapixel lenses, and even HD-capable cameras. However, this isn’t the only important part of the equation. The notebook in question also needs to have a good microphone so that the person on the other end can hear as well as see you. Finally, you should look for machines with strong Wi-Fi radios that can handle the bandwidth it takes to make great video calls. There are three notebooks and a tablet we recommend for David.
The new 13-inch MacBook Pro has an excellent webcam and good integrated microphone, plus the bonus of working with Apple’s FaceTime video chat service. This means you’ll be able to chat Mac-to-Mac as well as Mac-to-iPhone 4 or iPad 2. You can also chat in 720p HD (from the MacBook). We noted a strong Wi-Fi signal wherever we used it. And the 8+ hour battery life is even better than previous generations.
The drawback to the MBPro is that, at $1,199, it’s above your price point. An alternative is the 11-inch MacBook Air, which starts at $999. The battery life isn’t as long (but still good at 5:18) and the Wi-Fi isn’t as strong, but it will give you a good video chat experience.
In our hands-on time with the iPad 2 at the announcement event we noted that the front-facing camera captured good images and smooth video. The experience is good, but keep in mind that FaceTime only works with other Apple products. Third-party apps exist that allow for mobile to mobile calls, but for iPad to PC there are few, if any, options. However, if you’re an Apple household, this is a good choice.
On the Windows side there’s the ASUS U36Jc, a 13-inch ultraportable that costs $999. Though the webcam is only 0.3 megapixels, it still captures good images and works under a variety of lighting conditions. The integrated mic picks up clear audio. When close to the router, the notebook had good throughput, but at 50 feet away the score dropped below average. It’s still strong enough for video chats, though. And with a battery that lasts almost 6 and a half hours, you won’t need to worry about longevity.
No matter which of these systems you pick, be sure to use a good video chat service. FaceTime works for Apple products, but for Mac-to-PC or PC-to-PC chat, you’ll need something else. Skype is probably the most well known, but it doesn’t work as well in low-bandwidth situations. We’ve been testing ooVoo recently and found it has better video and audio quality when chatting over less-than-stellar networks. Plus, it allows for group video chat with up to six participants, so you can bring more family and friends in on the conversation if you want. Like Skype and FaceTime, ooVoo is free.
As we pointed out, the integrated mics on all of these systems are good, but if you’re in an area with a lot of background noise or want to have a more private chat, consider picking up the PC and Mac compatible Freetalk Everyman Headset. It’s designed to work with Skype, but it works just fine with ooVoo. The mic picks up what’s close to it extremely well but filters out background noise. And it folds up to make it easier to stow when traveling. It’s less than $30 in the Skype store and well worth the investment.
Good luck on your deployment. We hope our suggestions help you keep in touch with your family back home.

Student Loan Consolidation in the USA (United States American)

In the United States, federal student loans are consolidated somewhat differently than in the UK, as federal student loansare guaranteed by the U.S. government.

In a federal student loan consolidation, existing loans are purchased by the Department of Education . Interest rates for the consolidation are based on that year's student loan rate, which is in turn based on the 91-day Treasury bill rate at the last auction in May of each calendar year.

Student loan rates can fluctuate from the current low of 4.70% to a maximum of 8.25% for federal Stafford loans, 9% for PLUS loans. Upon consolidation, a fixed interest rate is set based on the then-current interest rate. Reconsolidating does not change that rate. If the student combines loans of different types and rates into one new consolidation loan, a weighted average calculation will establish the appropriate rate based on the then-current interest rates of the different loans being consolidated together.

Federal student loan consolidation is often referred to as refinancing, which is incorrect because theloan rates are not changed, merely locked in. Unlike private sector debt consolidation, student loan consolidation does not incur any fees for the borrower; private companies make money on student loan consolidation by reaping subsidies from the federal government.

Student loan consolidation can be beneficial to students' credit rating, but it's important to note that not all federal student loan consolidation companies report their loans to all credit bureaus.

Swimming Pool Heaters For More Use Of The Pool

Swimming Pool

During the winter, you might not as enthusiastic or willing to jump into the pool as you were during the summer. A big plunge into a body of chilly water is refreshing when it’s hot, but painful and undesirable in the midst of the cold season. But it seems like kind of a waste to not use a pool all year round.

If you do own a pool, you probably want to get as much use out of it as possible. Owning a pool means plenty of recreation for the family and for guests, and swimming is also one of the best types of aerobic exercise.

So if you want to be able to get a good work out and entertain the kids during the winter and not just in the warmer spring and summer seasons, installing a swimming pool heater is the solution that you’re looking for.

Swimming pool heaters can help extend the use of your pool by keeping the pool water at a temperature that’s tolerable for swimming use.

You might be reluctant to use a swimming pool heater because it might seem really expensive to maintain. However, if you properly insulate your pool you can save a lot of heat and money.

It’s best to use swimming pool heaters that have a cover because this prevents the heat from escaping and makes pool heating efficient by using and keeping in all the heat as much as possible. Using and maintaining a swimming pool heater doesn’t have to be an outrageously expensive venture.

There are 3 main kinds of swimming pool heaters: gas, electric and solar. Each has its pros and cons. Gas swimming pool heaters are popular because the heaters themselves are cheap, but buying the fuel to run them can accumulate a lot of costs and they’re not environmentally friendly.

Electric heaters are more expensive initially, but actually running them is cheaper than using gas, so they can probably be used more than a gas pool heater. Solar heaters are environmentally friend and they use outside light and heat, as do electric heaters, but they simply circulate it into the pool rather than converting it into electric energy, so there’s no cost to run them, but they won’t work as well when the weather isn’t sunny anymore.

So for a cold winter, gas or electric is a better option and the decision to purchase a swimming pool heater will depend on how long you want to operate it and how much you want to spend.

White Wicker Furniture

White Wicker Furniture

I’m not a professional decorator or anything, but I do take a certain amount of pride in the way my home looks. I manage to make the most of my limited space, and have a pretty good eye for which couches, chairs, tables, and accessories would look best within my overall design scheme.

Surprisingly enough, white wicker furniture plays a rather prominent role both inside and outside my house.

Decorating with outdoor white wicker furniture is a no-brainer around here. I can’t even count the number of porches and patios that feature these sets. I think one of the reasons white wicker furniture is so popular is because of its versatility.

Though the material is obviously the same, you can change things up by mixing and matching the fabric on the cushions, pillows, and table umbrella. And it’s easy to swap out the old fabric for a new design, which gives you the feeling of having a brand-new patio set without the high price tag. I love it!

The same principle holds true for indoor white wicker furniture. Its versatility makes it perfect for practically any room in the house. For instance, I have a sun room off the kitchen that features several great pieces, including a chaise lounge, armchair, ottoman, and rocking chair.

This is probably the most comfortable room in the whole place, and is the one that the family flocks to for television, board games, homework, and reading. White wicker furniture is also terrific for bedrooms.

It might sound odd at first, but I have some wonderful bureaus, nightstands, and vanity tables in my home — all of which have received lots of compliments from guests and visitors.

White wicker furniture probably wouldn’t go over too well if you were trying to decorate a formal sitting room or dining room, but it’s great just about everywhere else. The pieces are just so cozy and inviting that they give your rooms a warm, comfortable feeling that glass, lacquer, and even wood can’t pull off half as well.

Some people wonder about the durability of white wicker furniture and worry that it perhaps won’t last as long as other materials. This is a valid question, since nobody wants to replace their sofa or love seat every five years or whatever. But I’m happy to report that all of my furnishings have held up fabulously over the years — even withstanding everything that my young children could dish out!

If you’re looking for an affordable, stylish way to decorate your home, I recommend checking out white wicker furniture. The designs are classic and timeless, and you’ll get a lot of mileage for your money. You’ll be surprised at how amazing your home can look with the right furnishings!

Cost-effective Front Yard Landscaping Ideash

Front Yard Landscaping

Owning a home is rewarding, and expensive. As a homeowner, you are constantly looking and searching for ways to both maintain the value of your home as well as improving it for the market place. One of the best places to do this is the exterior of the house, whether it is the front yard, the back yard, or the roof. In fact, front yard landscaping is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve your house for maximum fair market home value. So whether you are looking to move, or simply want to improve the value of your house, here are a couple of good front yard landscaping ideas to try out for yourself.

First of all, all good front yard landscaping ideas have a couple of things in common. Most important of all is the idea of curb appeal. Curb appeal basically means the aesthetics of the house as it is viewed from the curb. You have probably often heard the expressions about the importance of a first impression. Curb appeal basically means the first impression that prospective home buyers have on your house. Any and all of your front yard landscaping ideas need to have a positive impact on your curb appeal. Improve your curb appeal and improve your home’s value.

Of course, not everyone agrees on all front yard landscaping ideas. Like many other interior design choices, you are usually operating with an expiration date. Not all design looks age well, and you should generally avoid both the dated and the very trendy. Your front yard landscaping ideas should, whenever possible, have a classic look that will last years, if not decades.

Then again, all front yard landscaping ideas should do a couple of things. First of all, they should properly showcase the house. After all, the house is the most important part of the property. You should think about twice where you plant those trees; are the blocking the house and windows too much, or are they blocking them not enough? You need to balance clean lines and a clean look with providing privacy and shade.

Whatever path you choose, your front yard landscaping ideas should have a good balance of your personality. Obviously, you should landscape your house in a way that you love, but with the knowledge that not everyone has the same taste. Make your choices not too bold and not too timid. I especially recommend you consult with realtors for their thoughts on your front yard landscaping ideas to make sure that you are improving your home, both for you and for your investment!

Slash drinking limits for the over-65s to protect their bodies and minds, say doctors

Alcohol limits for pensioners should be slashed to protect their ageing bodies and minds, doctors said last night.

They favour an upper limit of 1.5 units a day for men – little more than half a pint of beer, which is much lower than the current recommendation of three to four units a day.

For women over 65, the limit should be lowered from two to three units a day - equivalent to a glass of wine - to possibly just one (a single vodka and coke).

New limits: Experts have suggested that over 65s should lower their alcohol intake to protect their ageing bodies and minds

The combination of a growing use of alcohol and the ageing population is creating a generation of ‘hidden addicts’ who urgently need help, a report by the Royal College of Psychiatrists warns.

A third of older people with alcohol problems develop them later in life due to issues ranging from the strain of bereavement to the boredom of retirement.

Dr Tony Rao, a consultant in old-age psychiatry and one of the report’s authors, said: ‘As we age, there are other accompanying factors such as increasing memory problems and physical health problems and less of an ability to get rid of alcohol from the blood stream.

‘This means that the effect of what we would currently call the safe limits is actually more damaging for older people.’

The ageing body contains less water and more fat, meaning smaller amounts of alcohol can do more damage.

The liver takes longer to break down the poisons in alcohol, meaning they linger for longer in the body.

Finally, the brain is more rapidly affected, raising the risk of problems with memory, co-ordination and falls and fractures.

The report warns that growing alcohol and drug misuse among the ‘baby boomer’ generation is creating a ‘burgeoning public health problem’.

The taking of illegal drugs and the misuse of prescription and over-the-counter medicines has become more prevalent among the over-40s in recent years and many of these people are expected to maintain these habits as they age.

Recommendations include screening by GPs for substance misuse among the over-65s as part of a routine health check and a public campaign targeted at older people.

Ilana Crome, professor of addiction psychiatry and chairman of the working group, said: ‘We hope this report highlights the scale of the problem, and that the multiple medical and social needs of this group of people are not ignored any longer.’

Don Shenker, of Alcohol Concern, said: ‘We should remember that older people often turn to alcohol in later life as a coping mechanism and this can remain stubbornly hidden from view.’

The Department of Health said: ‘Alcohol misuse is a major public health issue, no matter what age you are.

‘We are already taking action to tackle problem drinking, including plans to stop supermarkets selling below cost alcohol and working to introduce a tougher licensing regime.

‘However, individuals have responsibilities too and everyone should drink responsibly within the recommended alcohol limits.

‘All advice is kept under review. We welcome any addition to the evidence base in this area and will consider this report carefully.’

Breastfeeding boom: Middle-class mothers lead the charge with 90% rejecting formula milk

Mother breast feeding baby

Soaring numbers of new mothers are breastfeeding, figures show.

More than eight in ten women start their babies on breast milk compared to six in ten in 1990.

The proportion is even higher among middle-class women with well-paid jobs – more than 90 per cent of mothers in managerial or professional roles breastfeed.

The rise follows years of high profile government ‘breast is best’ campaigns promoting the benefits of breast milk over formula milk.

Breast-feeding transfers a mother’s immunity to her baby, helping to protect it from chest and ear infections, eczema and stomach bugs.

Studies have also shown that it helps babies’ brain development and reduces their chance of becoming obese when they grow up.

Figures from the NHS Information Centre show that 81 per cent of mothers in the UK breastfeed for at least the first six weeks, up from 76 per cent in 2005 and 62 per cent in 1990. More than 90 per cent of those in professional or managerial roles, such as doctors, lawyers or senior managers on companies, breastfeed.

This compares to 74 per cent of those in routine or manual jobs – such as cleaners or those working on supermarket checkouts – and 71 per cent of women who have never worked.

Teenage mums are also far less likely to breastfeed than slightly older women.

Breast is best: The study comes days after hundreds breast fed their babies in a 'flashmob' awareness raising exercise at The Trafford Centre in Manchester

Just 63 per cent of women under 16 breastfeed compared to 87 per cent of those over the age of 30.

The figures, based on a survey of 15,600 women, do not show how many are still breastfeeding six months after the baby is born – as advised by the Department of Health – but it is likely to be significantly lower. They also showed that the numbers smoking during pregnancy had fallen significantly in last five years.

Just 12 per cent of mothers smoked throughout their pregnancy in 2010, down from 17 per cent in 2005.

Jane Munro, from the Royal College of Midwives, said: ‘The increase in the number of women starting to breastfeed and the reduction in smoking before and during pregnancy is good news for the health of the nation. It is a clear indication of the success of campaigning on public health in these areas.

‘These are, however, early findings and do not give us the important information about how long women carry on breastfeeding.’

She added: ‘This is a crucial issue because we know that many women stop breastfeeding when they leave hospital.’

Marianne Monie, of support group the Breastfeeding Network, said: ‘Breastfeeding their baby is something we know is close to many mums’ hearts, and most babies in start off breastfeeding.

‘The last survey from 2005 told us that, sadly, the vast majority of women who stopped breastfeeding in the first six weeks wanted to carry on for longer.

Miss Monie added: ‘We want to see women fully supported with skilled help to breastfeed for as long as they want to continue.

‘Breastfeeding is not just good for mothers and babies but because breastfed babies are ill less than babies fed infant formula, supporting mothers to breastfeed can also save the NHS money.’
